Microchipping

Microchipping – Peace of Mind for Pets in Perth

Every year, up to 8 million animals end up in shelters, never to be reunited with their worried owners. At Your Pet’s Vet, we can help to ensure that your furry friend doesn’t go missing. By investing in a microchipping procedure, you can increase the chances of being reunited with your pet and enjoy the invaluable peace of mind that comes with this.

What is Microchipping?

Microchipping is now compulsory for all dogs and cats. Dogs must undergo the procedure at 3 months of age while cats must be microchipped by 6 months of age.

A microchip is a device about the size of a grain of rice that is injected under your pet’s skin. It is embedded with a code that is unique to your pet and it is the most effective form of permanent identification. This code is placed in a national computer database, so if a pet is found, they can be scanned to find out who they belong to. Microchipping can also assist where the ownership of an animal is in dispute.

The procedure is simple and straightforward and it can be completed during a normal consultation.

Benefits of Microchipping

The main benefit of microchipping is the peace of mind you get if your pet is ever to go missing. With a microchip, you have a clear course of action that greatly increases your chance of being reunited with your pet.

In fact, a study of more than 7,700 stray animals at animal shelters showed that dogs with microchips were returned to their owners 52.2% of the time (versus 21.9% without microchips), and cats were returned 38.5% of the time (versus 1.8% without).

What is Involved in the Microchipping Procedure?

While the needle is slightly larger, a microchip is no more painful than any other injection. The chip is inserted under the skin using a hypodermic needle, and there is no surgery or anaesthesia required. In fact, it is a very routine procedure that can be completed in the veterinary centre.

If your pet has not been microchipped, we encourage you to give Your Pet’s Vet a call on 08 9271 3671. If you have found a lost pet, call our veterinary clinic to arrange a scan so we can reunite microchipped pets with their worried owners.
